So, How many political parties do we have in Nigeria?

There are currently 91 parties found on the list of political parties in Nigeria but before we go into that, let’s go into some quick definition.

What Is a Political Party?

Well, here is a brief definition of what a political party is. A political party is an organized group of people with the intention to secure the people’s mandate to control the government.

The main aim of a political party is to have its party candidate contest and win elections. There are three types of political parties, which are;

  • Ideological parties
  • Class parties and
  • Mass parties.

Most of the political parties always have party rivals or anti-parties and this makes it more like a competition and struggles for power.

Political parties also have their functions in society; socializing the people and educating the masses is part of their functions.

The type and structure of the system used in Nigeria give room for a multiparty system that doesn’t completely give room for a single party to run for any election without an opposition party. This is why we have more than enough on the list of political parties in Nigeria.

History of Political Parties in Nigeria

Back in the 1920’s, during the first republic, the NNDP (Nigeria National Democratic Party) was the first political party to be founded in Nigeria.

It was founded in 1923 by Herbert Macaulay, popularly known as one of the fathers of Nationalism in Nigeria.

The emergence of the NNDP was a result of the introduction of the Clifford Constitution in 1922 which gave 3 seats to Lagos and only one seat to Calabar in the legislative council.

Although, the NNDP wasn’t a national party it brought awareness among the people upon the struggle for independence.

Some years later, the Nigeria Youth Movement (NYM) was formed in 1932 and featured some characters like Samuel Akinsanya and Earnest Ikoli.

The NYM had to compete with the NNDP which also made Samuel Ladoke Akintola, Nnamdi Azikwe, and Chief Obafemi Awolowo join the movement and began a multiparty system in Nigeria. Other political parties also joined including NCNC, AG (Action group), and NPC.

During the second republic, the military government came into power, banned politics, and ruled for 13 years before handing it over to the civilian regimes.

In that action, a lot of political parties saw it as a chance rise up again but only 5 out of them were successfully registered and the 5 political parties were the GNPP, PRP, NPP, UPN, and NPN.

Thereafter some time, the military took over again and banned politics again but under the leadership of General Ibrahim Babangida – one of the richest politicians in Nigeria in 1989, politics was unbanned and 13 associations were formed.

Only two out of these associations were to be registered by the NEC (National Electoral Commission) which is presently called INEC (Independent National Electoral Commission).

Some months later that same year, the Armed Forces of the Ruling party (AFRP) rejected the whole 13 associations including the selected two parties which were to be registered, and then formed 2 new political parties instead, namely; SDP (Socio Democratic Party) and NRC (National Republican Convention).

These two parties started the new era of political parties in Nigeria which began to add in Numbers till today.

With the recently concluded elections in Nigeria, we have been exposed to a lot of horrors. No, I do not mean the bubbles of violence in several states....

Because if we’re being honest, there’s not much more to be gleaned from an image of a kerosene lantern over a Nigerian map.. If you say for running through trees and along fences, rummaging through trash bins, hoarding and burying nuts, and stealing food then you’re absolutely right.. It’s so bad even squirrels will reject this image.. Alternative Party of Nigeria This party really missed the chance to use Odunsi’s face as their logo 🤦🏿‍♂️.. Regardless of this error, from the logo, we understand why this party is called the Alternative Party.. Better Nigeria Progressive Party Please note that this party is first and foremost a progressive party.. Hope Democratic Party This party has identified Nigeria’s problem, and to them, it is undeniably hunger.. Well, it’s all there in the logo.. New Generation Party of Nigeria Listen up, Nigerians.. Peoples Democratic Movement It seems like this party has given up on the practicality of Nigeria ever having constant electricity and are suggesting that they have an alternative—flashlights.

ON Tuesday, March 8, 2022, the Federal High Court sacked the Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi; his deputy, Kelechi Igwe, along with 15 lawmakers in the state over their defection from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to the All Progressives Congress, APC.. In sacking the governor and his deputy, the learned trial judge ruled that the votes polled by a political party could not be transferred to or utilised for the benefit of another political party or member of another political party.. Before the decision was handed down last week, the High Court of Ebonyi State had dismissed the suit filed by the APC and its flag bearers, Senator Soni Ogbuji, Justin Ogbodo in the 2019 governorship election who had prayed the court to declare them the winners of the election since the PDP candidate had abandoned the mandate of the people by joining the APC.. Consequently, the court ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to immediately declare the persons nominated to it by PDP as governor and deputy governor or alternatively conduct fresh gubernatorial election in the state in line with section 177(c) of the Constitution.. In the case of Abegunde v. Ondo State House of Assembly (2014) LPELR 23683, the Supreme Court rejected the argument of the appellant, a member of the House of Representatives who decamped from Labour Party to Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, on the basis of factionalisation of the party at the state level.. Those who criticised the judgement on that score have failed to realise that the main issue for determination in the Atiku’s case was the legal priority of the decision of President Olusegun Obasanjo to declare the office of Vice President Atiku Abubakar vacant for abandoning the political party on whose platform he and the President were elected and joining another political party.. While upholding the fundamental right of the Vice President to freedom of association the Supreme Court declared illegal and unconstitutional the President’s declaration of his Vice President’s office vacant, based on his defection to another political party.. The court held that the Constitution does not make express provision for the vacation of office of the Vice President upon his defection from his sponsoring political party to another party.. Indeed, in the leading judgement of the court, Akintan JSC said that: “The action cannot be justified by the fact that he (1st respondent) had been suspended or expelled from the ruling political party under which he was jointly elected with the President or that he was exercising his fundamental right of association guaranteed by the Constitution.. Furthermore, Governor Umahi had constituted the government of Ebonyi State on the basis of the majority of the lawful votes scored by the PDP in line with the provision of section 179 of the Constitution.. Therefore, the APC-led Government in the State formed as a result of the defection of the Governor is illegal as it is a negation of section 1(2) of the Constitution which has prohibited the control of the government of Nigeria or any part of it except in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution.. Furthermore, in view of the several provisions of the Constitution and the Electoral Act which have provided for participatory democracy on the basis of majoritarian rule the defection of Governor Umahi cannot wipe out the 393, 343 lawful votes scored by the PDP in Ebonyi State.. The members of the National Assembly and the various state legislative houses should take advantage of the ongoing constitutional review to put an end to the subversion of the wishes of the electorate by compelling political leaders who decamp from the political parties on whose platform they were elected to resign from office forthwith.
